In fact, both my LG and I didn't pay Social Security for the first year we worked.
That year we started as F1 then changed to H1. when filling tax, you pick one visa status
for the whole year. So we all picked F1 for the first year and avoid paying SS. I started
my job on Feb. and I saved a lot of tax $$ on SS. My LG started on Sept. and his saving
wasn't as much as mine.

If you are in your 5th year or you are qualified to file tax as resident alient, you can only waive your SSN when you register for school. The F1 student's salary is still subject to SSN in winter or summer break when you do not register for school.
The payroll office has better knowledge than us. so...Do not worry about it.
刚才收到寄给ld的从SSN来的信。得到他的同意，打开看了一下，就是关于“your earnings record at a glance". 有一点很奇怪，就是在"years your worked"，写的是2004，是ld拿h1开始工作的日期。以前ld做F1的时候，好像也从来没有收到SSN的信，难道说F1的时候，是不交给SSN的税的吗？因为我是H1来米国的，所以没有做过F1（ft, 没有一个米国的学位好像一直低人一等似的，真不爽），所以也不好做参考。就是好奇，想八一下，做F1的期间，没有扣SSN的钱吗？好多人的F1时间也不短啊。。岂不是亏了不少钱，如果以一个ph.d平均5 年F1的说。。
你能直接申请到H1已经很牛了，别在乎什么烂人臭屁，其实美国人谁在意这个，更看中的事在美国的工作经历而不是那一纸文凭，我也遇到一个人老是在偶面前暗示美国学历的重要，其实那个衰男人念完了破PHD都三十好几了，前提还是正常念完。鬼知道他能否按时毕业呢？再说成天全奖。半奖不离口。FT白痴都知道RA.TA也都只是打工的。没本事拿FELLOW就说自己系里没有那个东东，当大家都是二五○！MM不要介意这些，感轻视的是因为他妒忌。
是不是h1过来的，头3年不用交税的呀？
