I like to read local newspaper like San Francisco Chronicle, it has many local news and some important world news as well. The good thing to read local news is, it provides great topics to chat with people, like the weekend wine event, International movie festival, weekend sale, new movies on theater, local sports(!!), etc. Besides, the stories on local newspaper are usually writen in a more casual style, which is the best example for small talks in most of the cases.
If you really like formal tone, go to cnn.com, it's much less fun for me.

同道中人啊，我也贼喜欢看local newspaper. 估计是被逼的，因为在国内的时候阅读量非常大，这里没有其他的选择，只好狂看it.
USA TODAY其实可以啊,不算太正式的东西读着也不太乏味
电视的话看Jay Leno或者Letterman吧,笑料多,又能学到很多日常口语
