If we check dictionary carefully, we can find make stands for "bring about; To bring into existence by shaping, modifying". So in a sense, we can say that clothing brings out the "man"(or woman or gay. :) inside. If Dalai Lama comes to your school in a suit, he is no longer dalai lama, he is Richard Gere. Sr. Issac Newton doesn't dress the same as a regular farmer, Clothing has always been the way to differentiate between the elite and non-elite, between children and adults, between men and women.

Clothing is the image of a person, and image is everything in a world of human beings and of their perceptions and interactions. Just like you want to write eloquently when you interact with other people on internet, because that is what people perceive what you are, you want to dress nicely in public, you want to send a positive message to the people around you that you are confident, attractive and successful, you certainly don't want to tell people that "you dress and look like a pig and all you people can go to hell".

Like an old American saying, "fine leather makes a fine bird", clothing makes a person.
Clothing is not a static thing, it is a dynamic and vivid language.

The affirmative side has listed numerous examples that how well a person should match his attire with the occasion. Neglect of proper dressing harms one's image. However, a person's interaction with the society does not stay at just following the dressing code. A good lawyer wins the trust of clients by successful cases, and a salesman hits a target by knowing the customer well. On the contrary, well-chosen clothes doesnot help an awful actor turn into the super star at one night. Fine feather can never make a pig fly.

In nature, feather and horn are alluring enough for males to attract females (or vice versa). But human society is much more complicatd and it is more challenging for a person to have a positive image of oneself. A gentleman is supposed to not only dress nicely, but also behave gracefully and talk knowledgably.

Under the same clothes, it is the wearer's unique personality that transfers a different message. Clothes might become a unique mark for a person, but it is just a symbol. The symbol would be meaningless if the person it represents behaves in a different way.

So far the opposing side of this arguement has been focused on
"clothes is not everything", but as we can see from ayanami and
my previous arguement, appropriate attire is the initial preparation
one must do to face the society. It is not to say that clothes can
replace other qualities, such as good common sense, knowledge, and
personality, instead, what you wear provides the first step in your
interactiion with other people. Image is indeed just skin deep, but
how can one expect people to act respectfully and sincerely if he
does not even have the proper image to begin with? To confuse necessary
requirements with the complete picture is an unfair arguement. The
way clothes "make a person" is much like giving you an entrance to
the society, or a place to set your foot on, without which your
personality and other good points might never have a chance to shine
through. The arguement thus, is limited to, "can we make it without
wearing the right stuff?" And I think we have all seen that the answer
for most people is, no.

Excellent summary for the affirmative side by DoTann mm!
Now, it's oncogenes who will summarize for the negative side thus end the formal debate.

Here comes again the Dalai Lama, though I don't like him as a Chinese.
If we follow what Aya said, I would be Dalai Lama instead of that real
person when he, and I went to your shool in suit, and the Robe seperately
only because he HAD BECOME Richard Gere! To tell the truth, I really
don't favor this idea because I don't want to be in India to eat these
weird foods!

Even DoTaNN confessed that "Image is indeed just skin deep", which is
totally inconsistent with whatever "clothes makes a person". So what's
your point? Can I remind you to focus on our real topic please and anwer me,
"CAN THE FINE FEATHER MAKE A PIG FLY"?

Clothes is important, but it is far from the ALL to make a person! You
can buy colorful clothes to wear and pretend to be elite or noble, however,
you inner qualities will show who YOU REALLY ARE. Clothes DOES NOT make
a person!
