If you have the WRITTEN offer in hand, you can first express your excitement, then ask if they are willing to pay more, given that 'the market average is higher than this, bla...bla...' Usually even if they are not willing to increase, they won't withdraw the offer.

you should do some research and then negotiate. but don't forget there are also other compensations like bonuses, 401K contribution, stock options that will add to the total compensation. You could end up making more money overall compared to going to a company that offers a high salary but no bonuses/poor performing stocks, etc.
