Financially independent(FI) is in fact not a big deal, really depends on what your own ego and expectation of life, yet also not only for you for also for your family. Hereby a big dropback, esp. for Chinese view, is of reputation and social status.

Most people I think, after studied aboard, really don't have problem to sustain living a life, but if really want a decent of everything, esp. with ridiculous competition w. each other, you have been forced to demand a nicer house and location, nicer car, and a uncomplaining wife or decent schooling for kids.

For me, financially independent is not a duty for myself, but for my family incl. parents. i.e. If they feel ease at living esp. financially, then that's my goal of FI.

2ndly, yes, I am sure I will continuous working. But FI vs. employed is mostly of contradiction. Even if you are executive at a company, you are not FI, because then your spending alreay at high level, i.e. you cannot lose that job of employment, meaning you always need to be very careful and cautious, obeying the rules and cut yourself to fit your boss' will. At the end, you are just a working horse, not a human of yourself where you used to it and take it as normal and justified. Yes you have to work. Someone may say working is way to keep you attached to the society or world. This is fake, superficial while the world is fully covered for social media and news.

Donation for charity? that's a big word for mid-class or normal people. I would donate if I feel the product/service is great and helping me a lot or that company philosophy I wish to promote, I will donate some $10 ~ 100, but to setup a Charity or foundation is not normal people's perspective or never can be fulfilled wish. Even for people with mn. of yearly salary, they still have a lot spending to keep their life status. i.e. Occasional donation is OK, but Charity or foundation is not feasible, just ot be realistic.
