If the major is what you really like and what you really want to dive in badly, it's better for you to look on the bright side of your prof. correcting your minor grammatical errors. Each time he corrected, you kind of learn where to improve next time. Right?

Here is a post I came across and probably it's not directly related to your case, but it never hurt to learn about others' stories :-)

Job as a reporter

Due to various reasons, my reporter friend will not be able to reply you in a short period of time. I would like to summarize what I know about her effort and achievement.

She graduated from an English major in a university in Northern part of China; then applied for the journalism/communication major in school in Nevada.

Two years master study made her determine to pursue a career as a reporter, although she knows how hard this is for a foreigner. The desire was so strong and she was so devoted in improving herself. She got support from professors and read all kinds of books to learn writing and journalism. She extended the program to one more year and completed her master thesis in journalism.

She couldn't get a job for more than half a year. She attended conference and looked for internship to accumulate some experience. High-paying jobs and green card were never her priority, she just wanted to become a reporter. Almost at the end of her EAD, she got internship at a state like Missouri. Worked very hard and got recognition from the newspaper. But the newspaper couldn’t sponsor H-1 for her. She never gave up and ended up in a local newspaper in a remote state such as Dakota. She spent more of the time reading and writing, and in the field talking with people. One of her stories about people using drugs in the local area got wide recognition from the prestigious old reporters in her newspapers.

The newspapers started to give her more and more responsibilities. She started to cover politics and got to know reporters from the associated press. The AP reporter really liked her work and encouraged her to apply for AP The entrance exam to AP was very tough – basically writing stories in various scenarios.

Her effort finally paid off and got her dream job. She spent 5 years in the U.S. learning and studying and practicing journalism before she got into AP.
