With regard to the charge of my using the ARC without permission, I represented myself on the jury trial of September 29, 2015, with a public defender as my advisor. I do not think that I am guilty for the following reasons:
1.ARC provides publicly open space for study purpose. As I have been told, people can just go to ARC as well as the Alden library and study there. So far as I can find, there is no notice or sign that says that ARC is not accessible to the general public. Also the police report shows that the Dean from Engineering department stated that ARC is open to the public 24/7. There seems to be a dispute over whether ARC is open to general public or not.
2. I do not believe that the university faculty and staff can arbitrarily tell people not to study in public places.
3. Even if ARC were not a public space, I did get the permission in order to study there. Two professors stated clearly that they allowed me to study at the conference room and that they have the authority to do so.
4. The concern was expressed over my long hours' work at ARC. When Ms. Bxxx said that it is ok to work 2 or 3 hours as some students do but not acceptable to work from morning to night at ARC as I do, I question if it is appropriate for the school system and society punish students for hard work.
5. The court judgement reflects what value the society encourages. It is because of domestic violence and abuse by my ex-fiance who is an OU faculty that I had suffered from serious personal injury in terms of mental health, physical health, and academic work. I have been trying my best to regain independence and self-esteem by hard work. The key point is whether the society should help domestic violence victims to look forward and work hard with self-esteem. Please ask yourself this question: What would you think when your daughter or sister broke her wings due to domestic violence, intended to fix her broken wings so as to fly again, but her effort had been constantly accompanied by harassment.
It is well known in the minds of the world people that U.S.A is a place of American dream, a place of democracy, fairness, and justice, but do you think it reasonable and logical that it is just because a female student has worked hard on her paper and because she wants to win self-esteem and independence by her persistence in her doctoral research that she was handcuffed, her freedom to use any publicly open space has been deprived for over a few months, and she has to go through a couple of pre-trials, a jury trial, and even a long-time appeal?
I closed my points by the saying from Thomas Jefferson:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
